Yay, we have a van!!

We've found a great van, a ford econovan. It has 2 fuel tanks, one unleaded, the other gas,the gas is very cheap and a lot more environmentally friendly than petrol. It's literaly just a van at the moment rather than a camper but we're having a bed frame built into the back so we can stick a matress on it, with enough room for the boards and other bags underneath. The man we bought it from isn't really used to dealing with campers and when I asked him about a vent (as we'll be living in it) he explained it has windows. That's good enough for us. (Helen, thanks for that mosquito net you left us, we'll be using it to make some sort of window barriers to keep the gremlins out). We hit the charity shops today to kit it out with the basics. We should have been picking it up today but it's raining so hard(apparently a months worth in 1 day)the bed fitting man has had to hold off for a dry spell. All being well we'll pick it up in the morning. We're really looking forward to making it our own and being back on the open road!! Hopfully heading to Geelong and maybe even Philip island (where there are lots of penguins and good surf).

  1. Hey Hey! guess you are experiencing the Melbourne four seasons in one day effect! When we were there the weather changes so quickly. It's about the only place in oz where people actually talk about the weather.Philip island is great go see the penguins they are so cute. Also St Kilda is great for drinks and a good night out with excellent music. Head to Gertrude street and brunswick street over in Fitzroy as well for some alternative cafes and chilled out late night music and drinking! We loved Melbourne our favourite city in Oz. Guess you guys will be hitting the great ocean rd, heading for bells beach etc. Hope you don't hit a fifty year storm! We also had a random great night out in Warrnambool so if you head that far maybe hang around for a night, the locals are typical ozzy towns folk but actually really friendly if you can get past all the pommie jokes! Enjoy and when john is feeling getter get on the boxes of goon! (or as my rather un-PC uncle calls them the aboriginal handbag!)

Hope you enjoy oz as much as we did. Love Emma

  2. Hi Emma, great to hear from you, thanks for the advice. We really like Melbourne too, started off staying in a hostel above an Irish bar called the Pint on Punt, near st kilda Junction, I don't know if you know that area. Loving the music scene. Now we're near the Botanical Gardens. Just heading off to pick up the van now, fingers crossed it's ready as we're very excited.x

Hope it's ready for you and you can get going! Sounds like you've done well getting one with two tanks - should be cheaper to use and good selling point too!
I have heard it's been raining - they say its 'shocking' in broken hill, raining and windy, better stop all that business soon!
